Richard Murphy's desk
BD takes a look at the workspaces of architects
Richard Murphy said: “This is my desk, or most of it. It’s a wonderful mess and I make no apologies for that. In fact I’m always extremely suspicious of people who have a tidy desk!! My long suffering administrator has a blitz on it from time to time. That’s Hiccup the office dog on the right. Actually she’s owned by Brian in the office, but comes to work every day. She’s taken to having her afternoon nap on my coat. There’s a score for a Beethoven Mass that I am rehearsing with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra Chorus at the moment. Other than that it’s just stuff. Actually out of camera on the left is a bit I use for drawing; yes I do still draw!”

In fact I’m always extremely suspicious of people who have a dustbin for a desk!!
Jones, that is not a real dog, you fool, it is a soft toy. Obviously this man Murphy is a bit of a big softie, sitting there, stroking his dachshund and surfing the net. Should be hard at work, designing more of those excellent Murphiesque erections, not sending dodgy images to online mags. Some days I think that this firm has all the design skills of Broadway Malayan or Michael Haskoll, but on other days they can actually design splendid buildings.
Really like Murphy
But that desk is a disaster
16 square inches of space for a mouse and a keyboard at a jaunty angle
.... staged nonsense !
The desk of a genius.
Creative compost!
stuffed dog? I want one!!!
Is it really stuffed? Maybe this Murphy chap read the feature on dog shaped buildings and this is actually a very fine model at 1:100 scale? Is it based on that dog, Deepfryer's Bobby, up in Auld Reekie? All I can really say "Woof" to Murphy and his team.
Even worse than mine- no space in front of the computer to lay piles of paper, folders, jam, string, etc. Or was there moments before this photo was taken. Happy days. ps Love the dog. How's the microlight?
