BDP and Drees and Sommer Nordic picked from shortlist of eight

BDP and Danish firm Drees and Sommer Nordic are the final two practices in the running to masterplan a new hospital and psychiatry unit in Copenhagen.

They beat six other shortlisted practices including Mecanoo and Atkins. More than 50 teams originally applied.

The competition is to design a 26ha hospital complex in the Bispebjerg suburb of the Danish capital which provides modern facilities while respecting the site’s history.

Andrew Smith, head of healthcare at BDP, said: “Danish hospital projects are, in our view, currently the best in the world due to their high design aspirations. And the project at Bispebjerg is a unique opportunity to develop the parkland site whilst respecting and learning from the original patient centred designs.”

The judges described BDP’s proposal as “innovative and creative”.

A final winner will be announced in June with the hospital expected to open in 2025.
