Liverpool PFI scheme is worth £288 million
BDP is understood to have won the £288 million scheme to rebuild Alder Hey hospital in Liverpool.
The firm is part of a consortium led by contractor Laing O’Rourke bidding for the work which involves building a new hospital on a park before demolishing the existing children’s hospital and putting in a new park in its place.
BDP was up against Anshen & Allen, which had bid for the PFI project with Balfour Beatty.
Alder Hey is one of the largest specialist children’s hospitals in Europe, treating nearly 250,000 patients a year.
A preferred bidder had been due to be selected last summer but the appointment has been hit by a series of delays meaning work on the new hospital – due to have been completed in October 2014 to coincide with the facility’s 100th anniversary – is not expected to finish until 2015.

So PFI - that very expensive 'off balance sheet' method of procuring public buildings - is still alive and well, and adding to the national debt!
