BDP has won two major projects in Suzhou, China via its Shanghai studio.

The largest of the two projects is the Suzhou Dushu Lake masterplan. This will involve designing a retail and residential development with high-rise office and ground-level commercial uses including 3,000 homes, 135,000sq m of offices and two 220-bed hotels on a 22ha site.

BDP has also been appointed to design the Suzhou Yinshan Lake Sports Centre, a 4,600sq m leisure complex based around an indoor sports hall. The projects will be carried out by the Shanghai studio with support from the UK.

Steve Gillham, head of BDP’s Shanghai studio, said: “BDP has a long history and excellent reputation within all the sectors that China is looking to develop; and projects like Liverpool One demonstrate how we can deliver large-scale schemes sensitively and seamlessly.

“This is crucial in cities like Suzhou where a balance between respecting and preserving ancient assets, and the creation of new urban realm, needs to be carefully maintained.”
