Tower Hamlets Council approved Amanda Levete’s redevelopment of News International’s Wapping headquarters last night.

The original design was revised after the planning committee sent it back to the drawing board in June. This followed English Heritage’s objection to the partial demolition of a grade II listed warehouse.

The project aims to regenerate the area by opening up the site with public walkways and open spaces including a restaurant and museum.

Work on the new headquarters – which includes a 33m-high atrium carved out of the original print works – will remain on hold indefinitely until the media market recovers.
