Croydon’s 25-strong advisory team is being launched this week
Former RIBA president Angela Brady, designer Wayne Hemingway, critic Hugh Pearman and V&A design director David Bickle are all on a design review panel put together by Croydon council.
The panel was recruited over the summer and will meet at monthly one-day place review sessions during which six-member panels will look at proposals for developments coming forward in the south London borough which is set to undergo a £5 billion makeover in the coming years.
Council chief executive Jo Negrini said: “The place review panel will oversee the development of the whole place with a view to improving the borough’s look and feel for those living, working and visiting the borough.”
The 25-strong team, which is being formally launched tomorrow (Thursday), also includes Maccreanor Lavington Architects founding partner Richard Lavington, Levitt Bernstein director Jo McCafferty and RCKa founding director Russell Curtis.
Each session will be chaired by Brady, Metropolitan Workshop co-founder Neil Deely or Orms director Oliver Richards, with five other panellists drawn from the remaining 22 members (see box for full details).
Angela Brady said good urban design had to be embedded at every level from street furniture to the way buildings interacted and connected with the streets and the community.
“As one of the new PRP chairs I look forward to working with a great team and steering proposed projects in a direction that respects quality sustainable design,” she said.
When it launched the hunt for place-panel members earlier this year, Croydon said it expected their work would focus on a number of schemes currently in the pre-application pipeline for the borough.
One of the first schemes expected to be looked at by the new panel is the plan by AHMM for a PRS residential scheme on the site of the old council offices at Taberner House which have now been demolished.
