CZWG's mixed-use cultural scheme for the centre of Southampton
City centre development to be fitted out by Glenn Howells Architects
CZWG has designed a mixed-use cultural scheme for the centre of Southampton for Grosvenor, which was appointed preferred developer by the city council.
The 12,500sq m development, part of Southampton’s major cultural quarter development just east of the civic centre, is split into two buildings either side of a new pedestrian route which connects Guildhall Square and a grade II-listed park.
Between them the performing arts and visual arts buildings will contain 6,000sq m of auditoria, studios and art gallery space above restaurants and shops. The arts accommodation will be fitted out by Glenn Howells Architects.
Adam West, partner at CZWG, said: “The bold and welcoming design answers the city’s brief for a new focus to its cultural quarter ambitions.”
The design maximises the street frontage for restaurants and cafés but the focus for the development is the arts space entrances that complete the square and are scaled to frame the Guildhall portico opposite.

Anyone else think it's just a standard cut and paste British mixed use scheme. You know, take some shops/offices/residential put in a box, slap on a skin and theres your scheme. The only interesting bit is the residential tower. For a civic building it does not look, well, civic.
Its got pink and yellow lights on it. How much more civic do you want?
wow, bleak business park architecture: coming to a town centre near you!
