Design competition to find architect for new national stadium
Richard Rogers and Norman Foster are on a 10 strong jury that will decide the winner of a new national stadium for Japan.
The jury is chaired by Tadao Ando and will begin sifting through proposals once the September 25 deadline has closed.
The competition is being run by the Japan Sport Council, which wants the stadium open by 2018 ahead of a possible staging of the 2020 Olympic Games – Tokyo is up against Madrid and Istanbul for the right to stage the event. The stadium will host the final of the 2019 Rugby World Cup, which is being hosted by Japan for the first time.
Shortlisted designs will be announced by mid October before they are whittled down to a final shortlist three weeks later. A winner is due to be announced in late November.
Firms entering will be required to have a Pritzker Prize, an AIA gold medal or a RIBA gold medal. Firms also have to have experience of designing a stadium with a capacity of 15,000 or more.
