Home of BBC World Service will become office for Japanese owner
John Robertson Architects has been appointed for the refurbishment of Bush House, the home of the BBC World Service in central London.
Work includes the upgrade and restoration of Bush House and the neighbouring South East and North East wings, as well as Melbourne House for Japanese owner Kato Kagaku.
Robertson said: “Our challenge is to preserve what is good about the building and not destroy its wonderful heritage, whilst providing the client and future tenants with the best possible accommodation and facilities.”
The Portland stone facades will be restored and roof terraces will be provided. The practice is targeting a Breeam ‘excellent’ rating.
BBC staff are due to vacate the building at Aldwych/Strand later this year and restoration work is scheduled to finish in 2014.

Equivalent of converting our cinema palaces into bingo halls or revivalist churches. To millions of listeners around the world London was Bush House, was the BBC. If our cultural heritage means so little, we might as well move the Queen to a hotel and sell off Buckingham Palace to the Japanese.

In many cases, the repurposing of those cinemas is what has kept them from demolition. Which would you prefer?
