Battersea Power Station masterplan by Rafael Vinoly

Team wants to take forward Rafael Vinoly’s masterplan

A bid championing Rafael Vinoly’s scheme for Battersea Power Station has been chosen as the preferred buyer for the site.

The joint venture between Malaysian SP Setia and Sime Darby has entered into an exclusivity agreement with Ireland’s National Management Agency to buy the land for £400 million. The winning team will also have to contribute £250 million towards a Northern Line extension.

It is understood the bid will take forward Vinoly’s ambitious masterplan, which would see the power station retained as part of a residential and commercial scheme including 3,700 homes, 150,000sq m of offices and 45,000sq m of retail and restaurants.

The decision puts an end to Chelsea FC’s plans to move to Battersea, for which KPF had drawn up early proposals.

A statement from the club said: “We are disappointed not to be selected as the preferred bidder for Battersea Power Station, as we believe we can create an iconic and architecturally significant stadium on the site in a scheme which is commercially viable and of great benefit to the Wandsworth community and London generally.

“We have been clear throughout this process that Battersea is one of a limited number of options the club is considering.”
