Central London project is practice’s first for public realm
Platform 5 Architects has won planning consent for a temporary cafe at St Martin-in-the-Fields in central London.
The kiosk, a simple portico structure with recessed sides, will sit on the east courtyard of the church between Trafalgar Square and the Strand.
Externally it will be clad in shot-peened stainless steel while a contrasting bright brass mesh cladding will be used inside.
Peter Allen, partner at Platform 5 Architects, said: “St Martin’s are great clients who understand the benefits contemporary design can bring to a historic setting and for Platform 5, it’s hard to think of a more exciting place to be building our first public realm project.
“We’re really looking forward to the construction phase and enjoying the cafe next year.”
The kiosk is due to complete in April 2013.

Aw man, not another f*n cafe! I love this outdoor space in the middle of the west end, its so unspolit by advertising or retail and it sits in the shadow of the church, its a real oasis. Its a great space, a little bit of magic. And now this news, Im so gutted! I work nearby and use this little square all the time. The picture of those naff little cafe chairs and all the rest of it, my heart just sinks. Enough is enough! Even the church yard is not sacred! Fair enough they have a cafe in the basement but cant they jusr leave the beautiful surface alone! I think this all links into what Zaha and Rowan Moore have been saying recently about filling every space with cafes and retail. Sorry to be so upset but I am gutted about this.
'contempary' design ? almost the right word
for f*cks sake a pop-up hot dog stall, pop-off.
and there's practically nowhere to get a coffee in central london...
