Prince of Wales to chair design competition
Winning house will be displayed 2013 Ideal Home Show
The Prince of Wales is set to chair a design competition for the 2013 version of the Prince’s House.
Architects under 40 are being asked to come up with proposals for a family house with traditional design elements that would “look beautiful in a street of similar houses”.
Prince’s Foundation chief executive Hank Dittmar said it was a unique opportunity.“
The Prince’s Foundation is already committed to training and developing the next generation through the Building Skill programme and hopes that this competition will offer young designers and architects the chance to display their talents,” he said.
The winning house will be built at next year’s Ideal Home Show and the winner receive £5,000. The house will also be added to a real development site following the show.
As well as HRH Prince Charles the judging panel also includes BD’s executive editor Ellis Woodman, Hopkins Homes’ director James Hopkins, TV presenter Kirstie Allsopp and Dittmar.
Also on the panel is architect George Clarke and Media 10 director Richard Morey.
The design will be judged on four key criteria including ingenuity, firmness, commodity and delight.
The deadline for entries is the September 11.

I am surprised and disappointed to see that Ellis Woodman will be taking part in this absurd competition.
Interesting to see the external wall material MUST be render. Bricks are clearly no longer acceptable...
"Architects under 40 ..." - note that's not the only entry criterion - the document actually states:
"The competition is open to any practicing architect, designer working in a related field, or university student
involved in a related course who resides continuously within the United Kingdom from 1 June 2012 to 1 June 2013
only. Individual or team entries are encouraged"
So an architectural technician could enter - and win. That would be interesting...

Don't go on holiday then - but then the closing date is 11 September 2012 in any case.
Entries judged on firmness and delight? Sounds like a fairy cake bake off..

At last! For 50 years architects have been trained almost exclusively to design buildings as individual objects, whereas civilised towns are created by collections of buildings (squares, streets, and neighbourhoods). And after 50 years of gross neglect, ‘delight’ – that vital ingredient that is most prized by people in their dwellings and neighbourhoods – will again be joining its companions ‘commodity’ and ‘firmness’. This initiative will certainly be welcomed by the public, and ought to be welcomed by the profession. After what has happened to our towns and cities in recent years, it is an idea whose time has come. Maritz Vandenberg.
