RIBA Competitions and housing association Affinity Sutton have launched a design ideas competition for part II architectural students based on the London Housing Design Guide.

Entrants to the competition, titled A Capital Idea, are asked to apply the principles and design standards set out in the guide to one of Affinity Sutton’s land-banked sites in the London Borough of Croydon.

For the first phase, anonymous entries will be judged by the panel which includes Richard Blakeway, advisor on housing to the Mayor of London and Peter Sharratt, global director for energy and climate change at WSP.

Up to six finalists will then be chosen, each of whom will spend a week with one of Affinity Sutton’s architect partners including Conran & Partners, HTA and Levitt Bernstein, before presenting their designs to the jury.

1st, 2nd and 3rd Prizes of £4,500, £2,500 and £1,000 respectively will be awarded, with £2,000 for the School of Architecture judged to have submitted the best overall response to the competition.

Registrations can be made up to 11 March with the deadline for stage 1 design submissions on 16 March.
