Boden Mill by Stubbs Rich
Practice to oversee development of grade II listed Somerset building
Bath-based Stubbs Rich Architects has won a design competition to redevelop a grade II listed lace mill in Chard, south Somerset.
Boden Mill was built in 1825 for lace making company Wheatleys. Stubbs Rich will oversee its redevelopment to provide shops, housing and a town square.
The project forms the first phase of a masterplan drawn up by LDA Design for developer Henry Boot.
The practice has proposed a scheme using local materials including stone, reclaimed brick, lead, granite and flint.
A listed archway dating from 1901 will be repositioned to create a focal point at the centre of the scheme.
Simon Coles, partner at Stubbs Rich, said: “Responsible and sustainable urban design is vital for the future of historic market towns.
“The development will give listed buildings such as Boden Mill a new lease of life while respecting the historic character of the town.”
