BBC Wales studio by Fat
Source: Hannah BarnsleyCardiff production centre features “gothic and space age” facade
A BBC TV production centre in Cardiff, Wales featuring a decorative 300m-long facade designed by Fat has been completed.
The building will host filming of BBC shows including Doctor Who and Casualty. It is also the first phase of a major regeneration scheme at the Roath Basin site in Cardiff Bay.
Fat said: “TV studios are an introverted kind of building, so the ultra-decoration is a way of mediating or expressing the worlds that are created within it outwards to the city.
“There are elements of the building which suggest both the fantastical worlds of Dr Who and the everyday aesthetic of Casualty
that are produced within it as well as references to Cardiff’s cityscape.”

When is FAT going to stop doing this? Robert Venturi was doing it in the 1970s and it wasn't all that amusing then. It's even less so now.
oh it's in Wales... phew!
It is a shed after all and so the facade will probably be replaced in 10 years when it reaches its sell by date - sustainable? hardly.
Its funny that in striving to be 'diiferent' all of the FAT buildings have become rather samey and banal, a bit like tesco.
I just don't get it...or is it a cynical statement saying that Architects are nothing more than decorators ?
The name "FAT" is now a bit old hat.
How about changing it to "Facades 'R US"?
"Ornament & Crime";
And the timber cladding's going off already!
Spiffing stuff, has a touch of Indian Colonial about it, ideal suited for a BBC outpost in distant Wales.
Described by FAT as both “gothic and space age”. Is it really? All so tiresome and well past its 'use by' date.
Why shouldn't they do this, what would people rather look at? A blank Ikea box building?
Its a TV production studio, so why not make something fantastical out of the facade, after all thats what they are doing on the inside.
