Evelyn Grace Academy, London SE24 by Zaha Hadid Architects
Source: Luke HayesZaha Hadid’s Evelyn Grace Academy in London has won the 2011 Stirling Prize.
The winner of the £20,000 prize was announced at a ceremony at the Magna Science and Adventure Centre in Rotherham, Sheffield, which will be broadcast on BBC2’s The Culture Show.
Hadid beat five other nominated entries, including the Velodrome by Hopkins Architects and the Folkwang Museum by David Chipperfield, but was not present to collect the award which was picked up by her business partner Patrik Schumacher.
It is the second year in a row that Hadid has won the prize, having triumphed last year with the MAXXI Museum in Rome, and it is the first time that a school building has been awarded the Stirling.
The Lubetkin Prize was awarded to WOHA, the Singaporean practice founded by Wong Mun Summ & Richard Hassell, for the Met residential skyscraper in Bangkok, Thailand.
The Stephen Lawrence prize was awarded to the St. Patrick’s School Library and Music Room in north-west London by Coffey Architects.
This year’s judges were Angela Brady, RIBA President (chair); Sir Peter Cook, architect and academic, formerly of Royal Gold Medal winning Achigram; Hanif Kara, engineer, Adams Kara Taylor; Dan Pearson, landscape designer and RIBA Honorary Fellow; and architect Alison Brooks.
Speaking at the ceremony Brady said: “The Evelyn Grace Academy is an exceptional example of what can be achieved when we invest carefully in a well-designed new school building. The result - a highly imaginative, exciting Academy that shows the students, staff and local residents that they are valued - is what every school should and could be.”

Wait...what?
Aha, fast editing...moving on...
It's just cos it's Zaha....
With all this Zaha talk aside I think it's great that a school building won the Stirling Prize
Why?
Congratulations to Zaha

A pity the TV show wasn't live - hasn't it been in the past? The programme is on at 5pm today - but we all know the result now! :-(
Zaha Hadid's work is predictable and boring. Oh, and as ugly as hell. But she can walk on water.
the velodrome is a one-in-a-million project which deserves to be recognised for its innovation and beauty. there won't be anything this good for a long time. this is british design and engineering at its best.
i wonder how many people actually use the running track in zaha's building. while it makes for a great image, it looks like a token cross-programming gesture from student project in the 1990s.
