RIBA competition to redevelop quad at central London campus

Zaha Hadid, Eric Parry Architects and Hall McKnight are among the shortlisted teams to redevelop the Quadrangle at King’s College London’s Strand Campus.

Henley Halebrown Rorrison and two Barcelona practices – Barozzi Veiga Studio and Carme Pinos Studio – also made the cut.

The quad lies between the grade I-listed King’s Building, designed by Robert Smirke, and the Somerset House East Wing, designed by William Chambers. The new space is expected to form a bridge between the two by transforming an underused subterranean area.

RIBA adviser Niall McLaughlin said: “The client was keen to explore a diverse range of approaches to the commission and chose a list of practices which will ensure an interesting variety of responses in the next stage of the competition.

“The list includes younger and more established practices as well as a balance of local and international architects.”

Teams have until mid-August to work on design submissions, with final interviews held at the beginning of September.
